Recently theatrical make-up went on a trip to the Prosthetics Event at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The day was full of demos, talks and advice from top film industry professionals, beautiful body art, extraordinary exhibits, exciting competitions and shopping with leading specialist retailers.
This is what Lydia, one of our Theatrical Makeup Students had to say about the event.
I thought the event was very good as it was a reasonable size and packed with a wide range of companies, and there were lots of artists exhibiting their work, both finished and unfinished pieces/models they were working on. I found it very informative with the amount of information, and I found it very interesting watching the makeup artists at work.
My most favourite pieces of work were the full-body art models, especially the one with muscles and bones with a prosthetic spine and fingers as I found it looked quite realistic and the symmetry was almost spot on. It had immense detail, and I really enjoyed watching the artist progress on this piece. I also really liked the rat in the hospital gown. I thought it looked extremely realistic and very effective. This model was one of few who really kept in character, and it really brought this amazing look to life.
I found the exhibition very inspiring, and I made sure to take lots of pictures and mental notes of the pieces so I can refer to them later on when I need some inspiration. The exhibition definitely presented a large range of talents and possibilities of the makeup and prosthetics industry.
My favourite picture I got was definitely the one I got of me standing next to Axel from Glow Up. I was very excited to see him there and was very pleased to meet him as I’ve definitely been a fan of his work. He’s definitely somebody I look up to and admire in the industry.
I would recommend this exhibition to anyone interested in SFX. I would love the chance to go to the exhibition again as I enjoyed it a lot and I picked up a lot of information that will help me grow my own skillset. It gave me a lot of inspiration to try new things.
I watched the artists apply prosthetics to the models, which is not something I’ve seen before. It was definitely more impressive watching the artists work on the models live, and I feel like I’ve learned a lot from observing them.
Overall, the exhibition was really good, but I think from what I saw, the shows/talks could have been improved, and I think it definitely had potential to become a bigger exhibition with more stalls and artists, as you could get through it easily in half the time the tickets were for. I also think the canteen/food area could be improved inside the arena as there is a very limited selection of food and drinks. It was very disappointing how the staff there were not accommodating towards disabilities.
I would definitely be interested in going on more theatrical makeup-based trips such as Harry Potter Warner Brothers Studios and Madame Tussauds, although I’d probably also be interested in different kinds of trips too, as I’m a very visual learner and I always find days out fun and exciting. - Lydia
