Pigeon Power

LAMP

On a very cold Thursday afternoon I took 3 students out to feed the birds in Jephson Gardens. We took some oats for them as a student mentioned Pigeons especially love eating them!

We headed down towards the lake and it was half frozen over from being so cold, there were a variety of birds there including gulls, geese, ducks and of course a lot of Pigeons! We sat on a bench and the students scattered oats on the floor, in that moment we were surrounded, and the ground was covered with Pigeons!

The three students poured oats into their hands and watched the Pigeons hop onto their hands and feed from them. They were light to hold, but got heavier when another Pigeon tried to get on fight the other one off for oats! The birds were certainly brave, and had no fear of us, one student even managed to get a Pigeon on their head!

The students scattered more oats for the other birds on the lake, but they didn’t seem that interested, it was mainly the Pigeons that wanted it. The student’s hands were filthy from holding them, so we washed our hands thoroughly at the end! Everyone enjoyed the experience and would love to do it again and I think the Pigeons would like that too! - Meg
