AI (Artificial Intelligence) has become the thing everyone has been talking about in creative circles in recent years. It seems the technology has just accelerated from something seen in films to a massive global industry, with Chat GPT being one of the first to hit the mainstream.
As music is one of the biggest creative industries on the planet it was only a matter of time before AI entered the mainstream. I remember seeing holograms of music stars who have passed away performing on stage years ago. Now we have AI voice generators of music stars which are close to indistinguishable from the real thing.
Before, it was amateur music makers using AI to make songs using pop stars' voices (some actually entered Spotify charts using the voice of popular artists). Now we have popular artists like Drake using AI in some recent songs.
There is no doubt that AI has helped streamline the path for record companies and musicians to get the music out to the masses. Advertising campaigns using AI images and film visuals are the norm nowadays. On the mainstream level you can even use the technology to write songs and lyrics in the image of your favourite artist.
But what is the path we are walking with this technology? Recent developments in music software have drummers and keyboard players as part of the software to create music for you. But even further back than that we have all probably heard songs using Autotune to correct the artist's pitch. Isn’t this a form of AI?
On a final point away from music, I heard recently that tennis tournaments won’t be using the usual line judges in future but AI technology. 300-line judges take part in Wimbledon every year who now won’t be needed. When AI becomes even more mainstream, society in general may well be very different to what we may be accustomed to. - Simon
